Armin could only sit and watch while his fellow cadets were completely wiped out. Even Eren was eventually eaten. Armin's reaction after was understandable.
The whole event was terrifying to watch. Armin is the smartest of the three main characters. While Mikasa and Eren were quick to get in the thick of the fighting, Armin was the one coming up with the best strategies. Unfortunately, even he couldn't come up with a plan to beat the Beast, Colossal, and Armored Titans. Armin decided to trick his friends into thinking he had a plan, then sacrificed himself. His death was the hardest to watch in the series. Not only is Armin a beloved character, but seeing him being burned alive was scary.
Titans suddenly appeared without a breach in the wall, and their attacks against the Scouts were organized.
It turned out that not only was the Beast Titan controlling them but he was creating them. This should have been the scariest thing about the Beast Titan, but, surprisingly, what really had everyone scared was when he started to talk.
The idea that a Titan could communicate was so unexpected, it left everyone absolutely terrified of what the Beast Titan could do.
Titans are scary enough on their own, but, somehow, the Female Titan managed to be the scariest one of them all. She seemed to kill without reason, and she was incredibly emotionless while she did it. Her speed and strength were terrifying as well, especially when she was suddenly sprinting towards an unsuspecting scout. It's a miracle Levi's squad was able to keep it together when the Female Titan was barreling towards them.
It was bad when the Colossal Titan destroyed the gate to the Shegonshina District , letting other Titans get through, but it got even worse when Eren and Mikasa arrived at their house only to find Eren's mother, Carla, buried underneath it.
