Excellent price! No problem. Got everthing transfered in about 4 hours old one is USB. Then after I was done and let it sit for a while it would go into an auto power down mode.
I could never get it back out of it unless I would unplug and then plug back in. The drive never froze as long as you were using it, but once it was allowed to sit idle for a few minutes it would freeze again. I went to the WD web site and downloaded a new firmware which was supposed to address this. Problem is I have Vista 64 on 2 computers.
Ok so I hook it to one that has XP pro 32 bit, but for some reason when I'd run the program it would give me an "Unable to lock out drive" error. So my last option to try was a really old laptop with XP Pro on it, but verry little else loaded on it Continued below. Overall Review: So finally I got the thing to update the firmware on the old laptop and it works just fine now on the Vista 64 bit puters.
Come on WD get with it already. What if I hadn't had a windows XP 32 bit computer to update this? Other than that I like the drive and would buy another one if I had to.
So if your buying one and have Vista 64 then hopfully you have an extra XP rig somewhere or can use a friends or something. Pros: Aesthetics are very nice, drive is quiet. Cons: Drive doesn't include an eSata cord firewire and usb included.
Power button was a little sticky at first and I thought the unit was broken. I knew I would have issues with eSata on these drives from reading online, I bought one anyway though and within the first hour of use during a backup the drive dropped out of my computer Vista 64bit , restarting the drive, replugging it etc didn't work.
Only restarting the computer brought it back. There was a firmware update available from Western Digital's site that I tried as well as updating the jmicron driver for my motherboard's eSata ports google around to find these.
One or both of these things seems to have put the drive back into working order and it did a 3 hour backup of the rest of my system and has been responsive from sleep mode since then. I use this drive as a backup drive for my data and it helps having a mirrored raid 1 for that little bit of extra security. Transferred data to it all day when I got this baby and the temperature stayed normal warm but not overly hot The user serviceable feature is a plus - which allows you to just replace the failed drive should one fail instead of replacing the whole unit. Cons: only has one USB 2.
I would like to have seen more interface options like firewire or perhaps even gigabit lan. Overall Review: newegg dropped the price 1 week after I bought it lol.. Pros: Lots of space for low cost. Easy setup allowed for my XBMC to get up and running in no time. Heard problems with x64 Windows, none here though.
Overall Review: With in a month would not stay plugged in. Couldn't RMA it since it was past a month. Have to deal with WD tech support not bad just a hassle, hope i dont lose my data when i switch enclosures. Pros: Capacity is ample for my needs USB 2. Cons: As others have stated, energy saving firmware is sleep happy.
All drives can fail, as one of mine did about a month after receiving unit. I've used WD drives almost exclusively for over 20 years, and I've generally had great success with them. Unfortunately, after just over a month of very light use, one of the two drives in the mirror died. Initially, WD stated that they could not replace only one drive in the array.
The support rep said that they would have to replace the entire My Book. What's the point of a RAID array if the whole thing has to be swapped out? After working with their support rep, I was able to get them to agree to sending just a replacement 1TB GreenPower drive. Until then, we all have to deal with the potential failings of mechanical and solid-state hard drives.
