One of the biggest disappointments of the iPhone is the lack of instant messaging support. Hence it is not surprising to see a flood of web-based IM clients for the iPhone.

We had eBuddy who announced the availability of their advanced web-based multi network chat client for the iPhone, then we had the popular instant messaging client FlickIM AIM only and not to forget Trillian Astra.

Based on the first impressions it seems to be the best IM client available so far for iPhone users. Earlier in the week, we had the iPhone hacking community bringing the optimized NES emulator to the iPhone which had got me quite excited. I had reported only yesterday of how Erica Sadun at Tuaw, a iPhone hacking genius had delivered on a promise made by Steve Jobs of a voice recorder in the iPhone by releasing her own version of the iPhone voice recording utility. As you would expect she got a very good response to her iPhone hack with some of them asking her whether they could have their recorded audio show up in voicemail.

Even though the iPhone voice recording utility is a little more than a proof of concept it works and lets you record audio on the iPhone. This new iPhone hack has got me all excited. As an SDK developer, you have a direct channel to millions of end users who have the opportunity to instantly purchase your product.

There is no doubt a great opportunity for innovation and profit with the iPhone SDK. This enthusiasm must be tempered with realistic expectations, however. Your applications will run in a restrictive sandbox to prevent certain types of access, and Apple has restricted you from using many private APIs that can access more powerful resources on the device.

While many see a pair of fuzzy handcuffs restraining the SDK, it is clearly a powerful enough platform to write good quality games and applications. This makes coding things like user interfaces, global positioning queries, and even settings bundles a much less time-consuming task than with other development environments.

Because of this, developers can focus on the more important aspects of a project. With just a few lines, you can create many different types of user interfaces, work with 3D animations, and mix audio sound. This book introduces you to the iPhone development paradigm and walks you through the frameworks that are key to designing full-featured software on the iPhone.

This book is geared toward novice and experienced developers writing applications for the iPhone. As you read this, consider that there is another side to the device that is not covered in this book. Many low-level objects and frameworks are off-limits to the SDK, but have been taken advantage of by the iPhone hacking community.

Chapter 3, Introduction to UI Kit , introduces you to the UI Kit framework and teaches you how to design basic user interface elements.
